Think about the most liked and respected people around you. What are the qualities they share in common? They are probably more extroverted and therefore more likely to be “heard” and “noticed”. This in turn strengthens their confidence in their ability to continue expressing themselves and finding an audience wherever they go.

But if we lived a world full of speakers, there would be no listeners. So what makes the speaker so important to listen to is actually the audience – the listeners.

Listening leads to understanding. Whether we listen to ourselves or to other people, it’s the act of being present that makes all the difference. And when speaking is done in a way that helps others grow and understand, then it turns into leading.

What’s one skill that’s undervalued in your opinion?
