For the longest time I thought being angry was a bad thing. So every time I’d feel angry, I’d suppress it and wait for it to be over. This, as you probably already know, is not a sustainable strategy.
First of all, anger is a reactive feeling. Something in our environment shifted that caused us to feel anger and it’s up to us to discover what it was. This way we have an opportunity to become masters of our emotional balance.
When we understand the reason we got angry, we can do something about it, such as strengthen a boundary or heal from an emotional attachment to something that happened many years ago.
Secondly, when you suppress anger, where do you think it goes? If anger frequently gets redirected deeper within us, it actually attacks our mind and body.
Anger isn’t scary. Avoiding it is the real danger – because anger doesn’t magically go away, it only increases with time until it’s dealt with.
