We are always changing, evolving, becoming.

Our identity shifts as we progress on our journey. Or does our journey shift when we gain missing pieces of our identity? It’s a bit of both.

In the words of James Clear:

“With outcome-based habits, the focus is on what you want to achieve. With identity-based habits, the focus is on who you wish to become.”

Call it the law of attraction or the law of assumption, but our minds are powerful tools. That is especially true when we’re working in alignment with the heart.

So there are two questions really to answer if you wish to develop a new skill following the identity approach:

  1. Who am I?

  2. What does the person I am do every single day?

The first question, “Who am I?”, helps you to look at the bigger picture and open up to limitless possibilities. Am I a painter, a dancer, a data expert, a financial guru, someone who’s kind and generous, or someone who leads with love and compassion?

The second question, “What does the person I am do every single day?”, helps you to zoom in to the specific skills that make you who you are in your complete identity.

The second question is not entirely about what you do today. It’s about imagining how today’s version of yourself will act in alignment with the version of yourself that is fully authentic and in possession everything you desire to be and have.

Remember I mentioned the law of attraction and the law of assumption earlier?

There’s a reason we say, “We become what we think”. Because ultimately what we think becomes what we believe in – and then it shapes our reality internally and externally.

With that in mind, who are you becoming next and what’s one skill that will help you do that?
