Exactly 5 years ago I was working my first internship after university. I was doing exactly what I wanted to do, but… I wanted more.

By “exactly what I wanted” I do not mean the number of responsibilities or the job title. I mean that I was working at a role that allowed me to rely on my talents and develop further the skills I needed in order to become the next version of myself.

What did I want more of? Creative freedom to express myself, to lead, to make a difference.

Today I am exactly where I wanted to be (in order for me to continue working to become my next version).

Life is a series of opportunities to level up or stay the same. The choice is ours whether we look at our circumstances as lessons and blessings, or we perceive them as never-ending detours from our happiness and success.

Before you continue planning and working towards where you want to be in 5 years time, take a moment to reflect on the journey from 5 years ago to today.

  • Did you accomplish any big milestones that were merely a thought at one point?

  • Did you experience anything beyond your wildest dreams?

  • Did you meet people that have changed your life forever?

  • Have you changed the world in some way?

  • Did you get recognition for some part of your skillset that you didn’t even know you had in your possession?

  • Can you think of any experiences where you acted with courage, empathy or humour that surpassed your own limitations?

Learning to honour your progress is an important part of the journey. It helps you integrate the life lessons and learn from past mistakes as you’re working towards building a better reality for yourself and those around you. It gives you a chance to check in with your internal GPS to see if you’re moving in the right direction!
