Giving praise to ourselves can sometimes be the most challenging thing in the world.
Why?
Because we know our deepest fears, mistakes and shortcomings, and the idea of the world seeing through our imperfections drives us crazy.
The crazy thing is we can never be perfect, we can only try to be better than yesterday.
Then again, when we try to be positive about ourselves, it often goes like this…
“I know that I am humble and smart, but…”
“I think I am honest and thoughtful, but…”
“I suppose I am creative and innovative, but…”
What if you replaced “but” with “which”?
“I know that I am humble and smart, which also makes me a great listener.”
“I think I am honest and thoughtful, which helps me navigate other people’s feelings with more ease while preserving my integrity.”
“I suppose I am creative and innovative, which has brought a lot of my ideas to life and in turn this has created a lot of opportunities for collaboration with others.”
Better, right?
Write down 5 skills you’re proud of and 5 skills you wish to get better at. Then turn them into sentences like the ones above. The goal of this exercise is to recognise how the skills you’ve already mastered can help you get better at those you’re still learning and acknowledge all the progress you’ve made so far!
