Can you think of one trait that you share with all of your friends?

It could be a positive trait like kindness, honesty, humour, intelligence or resourcefulness.

It could well be a negative* trait like sarcasm, impulsivity, perfectionism or stubbornness.

Sometimes it is our positive traits that connect us with one another, and other times we form bonds based on our negative traits.

Either option allows us to express ourselves more freely, which makes these connections feel authentic and supportive. But only one of them actually helps us to grow into better versions of ourselves in the long run.

*When does a quality become a negative trait? When it is not used in moderation, or when it forms as a defence mechanism due to unresolved childhood trauma. For example, children aren’t born sarcastic, but they might adopt it as a tool to get attention when their parents are not being attentive enough.
